Norfolk July 23 At Norwich aged 56 Mary wife of Mr D Denny , formerlyof Starston Hall and eldest daughter of N Pallant esq of the WhiteHouse Rendham Suffolk

Brother Thomas

One such true story goes that it became known that a group of poacherswere to visit the woods at Gawdy Hall, on the night of November 27th.1826, so the Committee decided to go out in force in an effort tocatch the poachers. So on this very dark night, the armed party whichincluded the Reverend William Whitear and a young man from StarstonHall called Thomas Pallont, proceeded to the woods with the others. Inconditions so dark that it was made difficult to see friend from foe,a shooting incident took place, and both the Rev. Whitear and ThomasPallont fell to the ground wounded, the latter losing a finger andthumb, the Rector more severely wounded in the chest, after some dayshis wounds proved fatal, and he passed away on December 10th. At theThetford Assizes early in 1827, Thomas Pallont was charged withmanslaughter, but was acquitted, the judge presiding reproved thewhole party for using arms on such an occasion.

The Hall

Another Manor which was reported to have a moat around it was StarstonHall. This moat is largely filled in now, but the site is occpied by anice Elizabethan house.
